Black Hole Sun – Log 3

By Chirs Cornell

Song lyrics

Introduction

Black hole sun is a song produced by sound-garden, it was released in there album super unknown on the 8th of march 1994. The lyrics of the song (written by Chris Cornell of sound garden) are about the question of is there a higher life form in the universe, and wondering if they look at us the same way we look at bee’s.

Paragraph 2

I found the black hole sun an interesting character expressed during the song. Black hole sun in the song isn’t really a character but more the realisation that that higher life form may exist. We know that a black hole is a scary thing in the universe, and the sun is more of a happy thing as everyone loves to see the sun. Chris Cornell has used the combination of something scary, and something happy, to try give us a strange feeling that we don’t quite understand. This is because the song is a question about something very interesting, making the phrase ‘black hole sun’ an appropriate phrase as it gives us an interesting feeling of not fear, but not quite happiness either.  Another reason for the lyric being appropriate in the context of the song is that a black hole is something we don’t yet understand. Just the thought of what a black hole could be could keep me entertained for hours. That mysterious feeling we get from thinking about black holes, is another feeling Chris Cornell is trying to make us feel listening to this song. This gives his song a unique taste to it which obviously worked as it is one of the greatest hits in grunge music. Chris Cornell has used the phrase black hole sun purposely to bring a unique feeling to his song. I’ve always loved this song because it always interested me for the unique chords being played and also the weird lyrics made it so unique and loveable, I also believe a-lot of people who’ve listened to this song would agree with me also as so many people love this song.

Paragraph 3

A message I took from the text was the possibility that higher life forms could already be here, but we may not know it yet. There are a-lot of people out there who are believers of aliens and extraterrestrials, all these people had made many theories about aliens already being here and just hiding. Chris Cornell knows this and used this theory to help bring even more interest into his song. He has obviously expressed this theory through his song for example, “in disguises no one knows”. This refers to the possibilities that aliens could be disguised among us but no one has any idea. He also states “times are gone for honest men”, which refers to that not everyone is who you think they are anymore and anyone could be an alien imposing as a human. Chris Cornell has used this theory created by society to bring more interest into his song black hole sun. I find the thought of aliens being with us already but no one knows super interesting, I’d imagine most of society would feel the same way, and listening to black hole sun I get the instinct of interest which Chris Cornell is using to hook us into his song even more.

Paragraph 5

I think ‘Black Hole Sun’ was the perfect title for this song. We know from Cornells lyrics that he is trying to get that interesting feeling out of us to hook us into the song more. This kind of feeling is created by hearing the phrase black hole sun. A black hole is a dark scary thought, while the sun is a bright warm thought, when they mix they create a feeling of interest that Cornell has used to hook his listeners in. We know he is going for that interesting feeling not just because of his interesting lyrics but also the chords played in the song. The chords played are super unique and not used very much in music, this is because they normally don’t sound good. Chris Cornell has chosen these unique chords and used them alongside the phrase ‘black hole sun’, to make his song seem super interesting. If Cornell hadn’t used an interesting phrase like black hole sun, the song wouldn’t have been as good as there wouldn’t be a solid hook for listeners to enjoy because it wouldn’t have a proper meaning. Chris Cornell has purposely used the phrase black hole sun to relate to the chords played during the song so there would be a solid hook in his song.

Paragraph 6

I would recommend this song to people of any ages because though it is quite dark sounding, the song doesn’t contain any explicit lyrics or have any dark meaning behind it. It is just a really well produced song that has a deep meaning behind it. Not only that but it could bring up theories in your head  that are always fun to explore. For example “in disguises no one knows”, could bring to mind the thought that what if there are aliens hiding in plain sight that we just haven’t noticed yet. Or another thought could be if there are aliens, would they look at us the same way we look at things like bee’s, or cows. Though that thought isn’t easily expressed in the song, people will still end up down that path of thoughts as your brain will keep creating theories. This is the genius of Cornell’s lyrics, as he’s given you enough to get interested, but also hidden a lot for people to try to discover themselves. He has done this purposely to get his listeners interesting in his song, and there isn’t wrong with kids wondering about the possibility of aliens therefore any ages would enjoy this song. It makes me feel a sense of wonder which I think anyone in society should be able to feel. I understand that kids may be scared of the thought of aliens but that’s the beauty of music as it is putting the thought of aliens maybe existing in their heads, but also putting a nice piece of music in their head as-well which I believe will counteract the fear from that thought. There’s no doubt Cornell has used the interesting thought of aliens being among us already to hook us into his music more and get more enjoyment out of listening to it.
